Strong performances by local athletes in Cross Country Championships

THERE were some strong performances by a number of local athletes in Sunday's Glohealth Intermediate, Masters and Juvenile B Cross Country Championships in Dundalk IT.

In the Intermediate Women's event Donore Harriers figured strongly with Karla Doran finishing fifth, Ashling Swaine 11th and Kim Hickey 13th.

Sportsworld’s Helen Brouder crossed the line in seventh with clubmate Kate Kelly 15th and Rathfarnham’s Clare Sullivan just one place further back, while in the Intermediate Men’s contest Rathfarnham’s David Power took 18th.

There was a fifth place finish for Shane O’Neill also of Rathfarnham in the Men’s Master’s division while clubmate Paul Fleming came home 12th.

Their performances, together with those of Ronan Kearns (39th) and Brian Furey (40th) saw Rathfarnham finished runners-up in the highly competitive team section.

The Rathfarnham Masters Over 50 team also made the podium after Paul Moran, Joe Casey, Tommy Bishop and John Farrelly combined for third place.

Kevin O’Connor of Dundrum South Dublin AC finished up eighth while Donore Harriers runners John Dunne, Michael McMahon and Niall Lynch took 11th, 14th and 18th respectively.

In the Women’s equivalent, Donna Mahon of Rathfarnham carded a 13th place finish with Justine O’Connell Urell of DSD and Sportsworld’s Ruth Kelly 17th and 18th respectively.

Donore’s Barry Potts was the fourth fastest Over 65 Men’s runner home with Paddy Reilly of Liffey Valley AC a further four places back.

Potts’ clubmate Terry Mee also recorded a fourth place finish in the Men’s Over 70 division.
