Motorists are baffled by the differences in petrol and diesel prices at the pumps.

A survey carried out on Wednesday morning (January 9) by The Echo, of service stations in our catchment area, found a 12c difference in diesel between Circle K service stations on Blessington Road and on the Tallaght Bypass.

On Wednesday morning, Circle K on Blessington Road, opposite De Selby was selling diesel for 122.8c per litre, whilst Circle K beside The Square was selling diesel for 134.7c per litre.

The survey also showed an 11c difference between Circle K on the Tallaght Bypass and Go service station on Kylemore Road.

Asked about the discrepancies, a spokesperson for Circle K told The Echo: “In the past number of weeks, we have consistently reduced our prices.

“Every day we review all of our prices across Ireland, including the Tallaght area and will continue to monitor closely to ensure we are competitively priced.”

The average cost of a litre of petrol has decreased slightly from this time last year, according to AA Ireland – with petrol currently at 132.9c per litre and diesel at 127.9c per litre.

In January 2018, a litre of petrol cost an average of 138.3c, with diesel at 127.1c per litre, however petrol rose to 150c per litre in October.

The cheapest prices viewed by The Echo on Wednesday were close rivals Applegreen in Jobstown and Circle K on the Blessington Road – both priced the exact same (126.8c petrol and 122.8 for diesel).

Other Tallaght service stations include Circle K Citywest Road (133.5 and 124.8), Cookstown (129.9 petrol and 133.9 diesel), Mayberry Road Circle K (133.9 and 127.9), Tallaght Bypass Circle K (137.7 and 134.7), Maxol on Greenhills Road (128.8 and 133.8), Maxol Castletymon (126.8 and 133.8), and Top at the Spawell (137.7 and 134.7).

The current prices in Tallaght are below what they were 12 months ago when for example, Topaz Cookstown and Maxol’s in Tymon and Greenhills Road were all (138.9 and 128.9).

During Wednesday’s search, the cheapest prices in Ballyfermot were found at the Go service station on Kylemore Road selling petrol at 127.9 and diesel 123.9.

Circle K Kylemore was close behind their neighbour (128.9 and 124.9).

Further down the road, saw the Applegreen on Ballyfermot Road at (132.8 and 125.8), Circle K on Kennelsfort Road (133.8 and 127.8), and Circle K on Palmers-town Bypass (132.8 and 125.8).

The cheapest pump found in Clondalkin for the second year in a row was the Applegreen on Monastery Road (129.5 and 126.5), followed by Top on the Ninth Lock Road (132.7 and 127.7), and Circle K at Newlands Cross (135.5 and 129.9).

Over in Crumlin, Applegreen on St Agnes Road was well priced (129.5 and 124.5), with the Maxol on Cromwellsfort Road (131.5 and 126.5), and Maxol in Ballymount (131.8 and 126.8), rounding off a sample list of service stations in our catchment area.

Last year, Circle K introduced premium additised miles fuel to the Irish market, something motorists would have noticed at their service stations in Citywest and Kylemore, slightly more costly than regular fuel.

Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs was contacted by The Echo on Wednesday but was unavailable for comment.
