Tallaght athletes storm to National Championship titles

A NUMBER of Tallaght athletes won titles at the National Junior & Under 23 Championships held in Athlone on Sunday.

Joseph Ojewumi served up a fantastic performance on his way to taking gold in the Under 23 60m sprint with a new championship best time of 6.83 and there was more joy for the club with Eoin Doherty taking silver in 6.94.

Later in the afternoon Christopher Duffy served up another impressive run in winning the Junior 400m title with a new personal best time of 48.75- nine hundreds of a second faster than his previous best.

Timmy Bada also reached the podium after he produced a PB of 22.73 to take bronze in the Under 23 200m while Simon Essuman posted a time of 50.25 when finishing sixth in the Under 23 400m Final. That followed up on the time of 50.42 he set when qualifying in the heats earlier in the day.

In the Under 23 800m Final Joseph Lyons finished sixth with a time of 2.02.44 while Brishan O’ Brien recorded 2.07.97 when he finished fifth in his first ever outing over that distance.

These performances followed a number of club members producing new personal best times in the recent National Indoor League in Abbottstown.

Ojewumi finished first in Round Two of the guest 60m Heat One where he recorded a new PB of 6.87 while Bada also produced a new best of 7.30 when winning Round Two with Simon Essuman following suit with a PB of 7.19 when winning his 60m guest contest before he later clocked 50.56 on his way to winning the Guest 400m Heat Two.

Eoin Doherty, meanwhile produced a season’s best time of 7.03 in finishing first as a guest runner in the Offaly Indoor Champion-ships in Athlone.
