Hilliard, aged 54, with an address at Bolbrook Grove, Tallaght, is charged with sexually assaulting a named female at a care home in south Dublin on a date unknown between February 20, 2013 and January 6, 2016.

He is also charged with sexually assaulting another named female at the same care home on a date between June 24 and June 25, 2016.

On Tuesday morning (January 24) he appeared in custody before Judge McNamara.

Garda Shane Whelan told the judge that he met Hilliard by appointment outside Rathfarnham Garda Station at 9.20am that morning.

He said he arrested Hilliard and added that Hilliard was later charged at 10.10am by Sergeant Brian Norton with two offences. Garda Whelan said Hilliard made no reply to each charge.

Hilliard was represented by his solicitor, Padraig O’Donovan.

Garda Whelan said he had no objection to bail but asked for certain conditions.

He asked that Hilliard continue to reside at his home address, that he provide the gardai with a mobile phone number and that he keep the mobile phone on him at all times, that he sign on once a week at Tallaght Garda Station and that he has no contact, directly or indirectly with any prosecution witness.

Garda Whelan said the DPP had directed trial on indictment. Hilliard was granted legal aid.

Judge McNamara released Hilliard on his own bail of €200 with the above bail conditions and remanded him for six weeks for service of his book of evidence.
