Tallaght Person of the Year 2016: And the nominees are…

By Mary Dennehy

THE judging for this year’s Tallaght Person of the Year has started, after 116 nominations, which represent the area’s diversity, activism and spirit, were received by the community-led celebration.

This year saw an increase in nominations, with 116 people, clubs, organisations and businesses deservedly nominated by the community – which will come out in force on November 11 to recognise and applaud their unsung heroes at an awards ceremony in the Red Cow Moran Hotel.

The diversity in this year’s nominees is a true testament to the range of volunteering that happens right across Tallaght on a daily basis, and the difference that these individuals, groups and businesses make in the lives of those who call Dublin 24 home.

Nominees come from a broad selection of Tallaght communities and represent a diverse section of areas including sport, education, mental health, cancer support, homeless services, youth support, community development, arts, environment and senior citizen support – not to forget the individuals also nominated for their contribution to the fantastic fabric of life here in Tallaght, like Robert Kelly, the Glenview Postman and the Civil Defence.

Gerry Stockil, the Chair of the Tallaght Community Council [TCC], which organises the awards, said: “We are delighted that nominees are as high as they are and good luck to everyone.

“I think what’s important about Tallaght Person of the Year is that everyone nominated is a winner.”

He added: “There is also a fantastic spread of nominees from all corners of Tallaght and hopefully this spread will continue, it bodes really well for the future.”

The awards, which are apolitical, contain eight categories – Arts and Culture, Business, Garda Callanan Community award, the Michael Dooley Environment award, Special Needs and Carers, Heart of Gold, Youth and the Philip Preston Sports Awards.

Tallaght and its army of unsung heroes will be recognised at a special awards ceremony in the ballroom of the Red Cow Moran’s Hotel on Friday, November 11 – when comedian, actor and writer Paul Tylak, who lives in Firhouse, will be the guest of honour.
