Tallaght students do have the eye for Maths

NEARLY 300 students had their ‘Maths Eyes’ opened in Tallaght last week, as part of a maths education initiative between IT Tallaght, Old Bawn Community School and four local primary schools.

The project saw transition year students from Old Bawn Community School get trained in how to identify the real-life application of maths, in order to make it more engaging to students, and then impart their knowledge onto the primary school students.

The primary school students from St Martin De Porres National School, St Dominic’s National School, Scoil Maelruain Senior National School and Scoil Maelruain Junior National School then worked in groups with their teachers and the secondary school students to create posters to display their new mathematical knowledge.

The Tallaght ‘Maths Eyes’ project culminated in a display of all the students’ posters in IT Tallaght last Friday, where everyone involved got a chance to see how the world around us is shaped by maths.

Ciaran O’Sullivan, a maths lecturer from IT Tallaght, said: “It was great, the students have done great work and they liked seeing the work being displayed.

“The power of the project for me was what that it got so many elements of the community together.

“It does change the conversation that the kids have around maths – they see maths outside the classroom.”

Mr O’Sullivan added: “The project shows in particular what can be achieved by all three levels of education working together in and for the Tallaght community.”

63 posters in total were displayed, and the students then took part in workshops which explored the posters in more detail.
