Tallaght West Credit Union 40 years doing business in community

TALLAGHT West Credit Union celebrated their 40th year in business with a celebration dinner at the Plaza Hotel on Saturday, October 28.

“The Board of Tallaght West wanted to organise an event to thank and celebrate all the people who contributed so much to the credit union over those decades,” said Daren O’Neill, CEO, Tallaght West Credit Union Limited.

“As Tallaght West was one of the last credit unions founded in Ireland, we are lucky enough to have many of our founding members still in the area.

“The very first member, and first Chairman of the Credit Union is Michael Geaney who was delighted to attend on the night.

“Previous Board Members, Volunteers and former staff were in attendance to share stories of collection centres set up in schools, teams of volunteers keeping accounts by hand in the pre-computerised era, and the great sense of camaraderie this engendered among the people involved.

“The Chair of the current Board, Ann Mitchell, was delighted to welcome everyone to the event and thank everyone who made the credit union such a success down the years,” said Mr O’Neill.

From humble beginnings in October 1982, Tallaght West Credit Union now has over 18,500 members in the wider area of West Tallaght and Citywest.

Members trust them with over €60 million in savings and last year €10 million in new loans were issued.

The branches purpose-built offices in Springfield show how the credit union invests in the area, while other financial institutions are shutting branches and withdrawing services.

Their team of 17 staff look after members at the counter, by phone and online.

With plans to offer current account services and mortgages in the coming years, the local credit union is about keeping services in our communities.

People looking after people.
