The Echo Year In Review November 2016: Burgled boilers, drug horses, and pushing for Barretstown

By Brendan Grehan

NOVEMBER was a month packed full of news and great events. The Echo covered nearly all of them from the bizarre to the tragic.

Perhaps the strangest story during the year was Maurice Garvey’s exclusive report about how some horses in Clondalkin and Ballyfermot are being used to transport drugs.

A horse, rescued in Clondalkin by the not-for-profit organisation My Lovely Horse, was found to have cocaine stashed in its rear.

Volunteers made the grim discovery when they brought the animal back to the farm for veterinary care.

Six men and one woman, who had been charged with the murder of Dale Creighton on New Year’s Day 2014, had their murder charges dropped at the start of the month. Five of the men pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the two co-accuseds pleaded to lesser charges.

It wasn’t all bad news of course. Over in Lucan, James Casserly (10) was pushed the 26.2 miles of the Dublin City Marathon in his wheelchair by Mark Lacey. We reported in November that James and Mark have raised over €45,000 for Barretstown. A week later, Mark and his wife also ran the New York City Marathon.

Illegal dumping and fly-tipping is a big problem in the county and Mary Dennehy reported during the month that mobile, covert, night vision CCTV could soon be introduced to combat those practices in the Dublin Mountains.

Sean Matthews’ eight-month-old Chihuahua, Mojo, went missing at the start of the month. Sean’s mother, Tara, launched a social media campaign and the good news is that Mojo was found in December and is now back home with Sean.

The Gardaí in Lucan launched a probe after a number of brand new boilers were stolen from a housing development within 24 hours of being fitted. The theft occurred at the new builds at Tullyhall in Lucan on Monday, November 7. The average cost of a new boiler is €1,000.

Over in Clondalkin, Coláiste Bríde, sent out a text alert to parents advising them on child safety after a girl was followed by occupants of a car as she made her way home from school.

Back in Tallaght, Simon Sweeney from The Kiltipper Ramblers was crowned the Tallaght Person of the year 2016.
