THE spirit of the Easter Rising was alive in the Cherrytree pub in Walkinstown last weekend, as the Cherrytree players staged a live-action production called Remembering The Rising. The production ran from Thursday until Saturday.

Remembering The Rising told the story of the Easter Rising through some of its most well-known faces, including James Connolly, Countess Markievicz, Michael Mallin and Padraig Pearse.

The story was told within the crowd in attendance in the Cherrytree pub, which saw a packed crowd on all three nights interacting with the show.

Owner of the Cherrytree, Gerry McGeough, told The Echo: “The entire show went very well. It was quite an unusual setup that we had, but we were very lucky that we have the Cherry Tree players there to bring it all together.

“We had a very strong team to pick from, and I definitely feel that we marked the centenary well.

“Everyone has been buzzing about it since. Originally, it was to be a night of songs and stories about the Easter Rising, but it turned into a night of enactments and putting a human face to the Rising.

“The production focused on the Mallin family, and the interaction with the crowd in the pub really made it unique.”

Gerry, who is from Inchicore, also told The Echo about the public response to the 1916 centenary in the local area.

He said: “Inchicore is currently immersed in the commemoration of the Easter Rising. I’ve been on four walks of remembrance already, and the tours of the nearby Kilmainham Gaol are booked out – you have to be there first thing in the morning if you have any hope of getting a ticket.”

Remembering The Rising is only one of a number of live productions that have been staged in the Cherrytree, with the Cherrytree Players performing two or three productions a year.

More information about the Cherrytree Players and their performances can be found on the Cherrytree Walkinstown Facebook page.
