THE Square has now become one of only six shopping centres nationwide to be awarded EcoMerit Certification, which recognises businesses that effectively take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Some of the work carried out by the centre which led to them being awarded the certification included making all mall area and back corridor lighting energy-efficient LED lighting, and repairing a number of hidden leaks in order to reduce water wastage.

Jack Martin, director of retail at The Square Town Centre said: “This is part of our ongoing green strategy to be a friendly and ecologically responsible business, that helps protect the environment and sustain natural resources for current and future generations.”

Future environmental plans for the centre include assessing the potential for rain water harvesting, and using solar panels to generate electricity.

The Mayor of South Dublin, councillor Guss O’Connell, who presented the centre with its certification, said:“It is a great privilege to award the EcoMerit Certification to The Square which has not only demonstrated the efficient management and use of resources but has also committed to achieving ongoing environmental improvements for the years to come.

“This is also a great honour for the people of Tallaght and a tribute to the mighty community spirit that The Square had been so instrumental in fostering and supporting.”

The EcoMerit Programme is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency and supported by South Dublin County Council.
