‘Think of your grandchild the next time’ judge tells man

A MAN received a four-year driving disqualification which gives him “hope” when he gets out of prison.

Hugh Boylan (45), with an address Knockmore Green, Tallaght, appeared before Tallaght District Court, pleading guilty to driving without insurance.

Garda Adrian O’Sullivan told the court that on February 2, 2022, Mr Boylan was stopped in a vehicle at Cheeverstown Road, Tallaght, and failed to produce car insurance or a driver licence.

The court heard he has four previous convictions for no insurance, the most recent a five-year disqualification in 2023.

Mr Boylan appeared in custody, serving a separate sentence since January 2025 for causing harm, and is due out on October 25.

Defence solicitor Ethan Foley said his client is a father of three and recently became a grandfather, who is “doing quite well” in custody.

Mr Foley said his client has taken mathematics and business courses while in prison, is a plasterer by trade and has work set up in the industry when he is released.

Mr Foley appealed for leniency to keep his client on the “straight and narrow” as he prepares to get back to civil society.

Judge Patricia McNamara took into account the personal circumstances and guilty plea of the defendant.

“I will leave the disqualification at four years minimum to give him hope,” said the Judge.

“Think of your grandchild the next time you are tempted to get into a car without insurance otherwise you are facing five months imprisonment.”
