Tower storm to title
ROUND Tower Clondalkin have won the Junior 1 Camogie Championship following a domineering 3-10 to 1-01 victory in Abbotstown last weekend against Ballinteer St Johns
It was a rapid start for Tower who got off to a hugely impressive start leading by 1-04 to 0-00 after the opening minutes of the game.
Ultimately they never relinquished their hold on the contest and ran out as deserving winners on the day.
Kate Whelan managed two goals in the game with Kitty Quinlan also netting. Sinead Gleeson was a consistent point scoring threat for the side knocking over scores from play as well as dead balls.
It was an unfortunate game for Ballinteer who did not perform to their full capability. Having been unbeaten in all of their other championship games, they simply were unable to withstand the attacking talents of a Round Tower side that had impressed heavily throughout the championship.
Round Tower defeated teams such as Commercials, Faughs Celtic and Raheny on their way to the final. Aoife Robertson won player of the match on the day for the team starring at number six throughout the contest.
The team is in an extremely positive place at the moment with the camogie section thriving across the club, young talent is consistently coming through.
This can be seen from the average age of the Tower team yesterday with the eldest being just 25.
One of the coaches on the team, Alan Milton is extremely optimistic about what the future can hold for this particular team as they will gear up for Inter 2 level next year.
“We’d be very confident, with a similar attitude and more hard work. In the next few weeks we will sit down and assess the landscape and see what we have to do.
‘You can’t’ simply do what you did and expect the same results at a higher level, you’ve got to add to it.
‘Whatever that looks like. There will be plenty of time for that in the coming weeks.
‘We want the girls to enjoy this for the next few days. We like to think that this will energise the whole scene and anyone who perhaps wasn’t involved this year might put their hands forward to be involved with this great group.”
“I don’t think we’ll be too far from having a third adult camogie team in the coming years.
‘The work that’s going on underage and the championship win is a testament to what lots of coaches are doing at every grade throughout the club in the camogie section. It’s a real club effort in that regard.”
The day was an extremely positive one across the camogie section as a whole for the club with the U16’s putting in a superb performance also.
They travelled to St Anne’s Park to take on Clontarf in their Division Two Championship semi final and after being ten points down, launched an extremely impressive comeback to win the game 5-11 to 5-09 and book themselves a place in the final.
