Walshe wins first World Cup gold of series
ELLEN Walshe claimed her first victory of the 2026 World Aquatics World Cup Series on Saturday in the 200m Butterfly final in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Walshe had already earned a silver in the event in the opening leg of the series in Baku Azerbaijan a couple of weeks ago before earning a bronze in the 200m Backstroke last Friday night.
The Templeogue swimmer touched home with a time of 2:04.05, a full two seconds clear of China’s Xinyang Zhou who finished in 2:06.12.
Walshe narrowly missed out on a fourth medal as she competed in the 200m Individual Medley final where she came fourth overall with a time of 2:07.00. This was her fastest time in the event across the series.
Her teammate Mona McSharry brought her total medal tally across the three legs of the event to a staggering nine as she claimed bronze in the 50m Breastroke with a time of 29.89.
Attention for the two swimmers now turns towards the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) which will be held in Beijing China from December 1st to the 6th. Both McSharry and Walshe are set to compete with the full Ireland squad being announced in November.
