Trinity Sports Campus set for Iveagh Grounds
By Maurice Garvey
TRINITY College are currently involved in advanced stage negotiations for the purchase of new off-campus sports grounds at the historic Iveagh Grounds in Crumlin.
The 17-acre site located off the Crumlin Road will provide a floodlit grass soccer and GAA pitch, a grass rugby pitch, a natural grass bowls green, a handball alley, a sand-based hockey pitch – which could also be divided to create further 5-a-side football pitches.
The Iveagh Grounds are currently home to a number of sports teams including St James Gaels GAA Club, and Guinness Athletic Union, Guinness Ladies Hockey Club, Guinness Rugby and Guinness Pitch and Putt.
The Echo understands that local sports clubs will be able to remain in situ at the site, despite the fact that the development is still in negotiation stages and no agreement has been reached at this stage.
A third party is understood to have come on board with a view to purchasing the facilities, which would greatly benefit sports clubs availing of the grounds.
Guinness Athletic Union were established in the Iveagh grounds since the 1920s.
A spokesperson for the club said details of the development are “unclear at this stage” and “nothing is signed” but plans are for the existing local sports clubs to co-habit the new development once it is built and ready to go.
