Tymon Park footpaths to close for six months to allow for pitch upgrades

Tymon Park will see a number of footpaths closed for six months this year as local playing pitches will receive an upgrade, reports Aura McMenamin.

The closures, from today, April 4, to October 2018, will be to facilitate major sanding, drainage and other construction work on two pitches at St Jude’s GAA and Templeogue United FC.

Footpaths will close for six months to allow for upgrade of playing pitches

The footpaths mainly affected will be around the Wellington Lane Area of Templeogue, near the clubhouses and from Limekiln pond up along the path beside the pitches.

According to Social Democrats councillor Dermot Looney, the construction works are welcome but the six month closures will cause an inconvenience for park users.

Cllr Looney said: “The works are very welcome, and will greatly help the intensified use of these pitches.”

Very long time

He said that six months was an excessive amount of time for works: “Six months is a very long time for closures. I raised it at last week’s monthly county council meeting. We have to make sure that timelines are kept.

“The Tymon park run on Saturdays will have to reroute and it will case an inconvenience for daily walkers and future fun runs as well.”

A representative from South Dublin County Council said:

“South Dublin County Council has received funding in the sum of €235,000 from the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport for the construction of two sand-based pitches in the south-eastern section of Tymon Park.

“The existing grass pitches are currently licenced to 2 local sports clubs; who are also contributing funding towards the upgrade of the facilities in line with the terms of Sports Capital Grant Funding. The upgrade of the facilities to sand-based pitches will provide an enhanced playing surface and allow for increased use over a longer playing season.

“The construction is due to commence in April and works will proceed over the summer. As the works involve extensive earthworks it is preferable this work proceeds during summer months to increase the potential for favourable weather conditions and minimise potential damage to the park.

“Diversionary routes will be in place for park users for the duration of the works.”
