Tyrrell helps Ireland to a World Series best
HANNAH Tyrrell from Clondalkin helped the Ireland Women’s Sevens team to their best ever finish in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after they emerged fourth from the Sydney 7s tournament last weekend.
The team remained unbeaten after their three group matches, topping Pool B on the opening day of competition.

Indeed a 7-7 draw with Russia was followed up with a nailbiting 15-14 victory over Canada in which Tyrrell, together with Louise Galvin and Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe served up crucial tries.
That win left them on a sound footing for their final group match against Fiji which they won out 24-19.
It set them up for a Cup quarter final against Spain in which they stormed to a 22-7 victory, Eve Higgins and Murphy Crowe breaking over.
Facing hosts and reigning World Series champions Australia in the penultimate rounds, Ireland put up a brave showing, but were eventually beaten 24-12, Murphy Crowe accounting for their two tries, with Tyrell having a significant hand in both.
The defeat left them up against USA for the bronze medal play-off, but a poor first half saw them trailing 19-0 at the break.
While they confined their opponents to just a further seven in the second period, Ireland were able to muster up only two tries from Murphy Crowe and Eve Higgins in the same period and ultimate lost out 26-10.
Still is was a hugely successful outing for Ireland and one that earned them 14 World Series points, that saw them leap-frog Russia into sixth place at the halfway stage of the season and ahead of the next round in Kitakyushu, Japan on April 20-21.
