Volunteers honoured for supporting the homeless

VOLUNTEERS who helped homeless people survive Storm Emma, were recognised for their selfless work at a ceremony in the Mansion House.
Over 40 staff and residents answered a call put out prior to the storm by Cherry Orchard Community Centre.

Over the course of 48 hours, local volunteers provided hot meals and assistance to some 13 homeless people, who took refuge from the blizzard.
David O’Donovan, Cherry Orchard Project Manager, Dublin City Council, said he would “rather have the building open and empty than have it closed and the community struggling.”
The centre remained open during the worst of the storm conditions, with accommodation arrangements in place for a vulnerable group of people.
Cherry Orchard residents involved in the initiative were honored at a recent event hosted in the Mansion House by Dublin Lord Mayor, Mícheál MacDonncha.
Cllr Daithi Doolan said: “The residents from across Cherry Orchard were rightly honoured for the great work they did during the recent freezing weather. They gave selflessly at a time when it would have been easier to stay at home.
“This community rallied together to provide beds, services and support for homeless people at a time when it was most needed. It was great to see their services get recognition. This is the best of community spirit. It is what makes Cherry Orchard the great place it is today.”
