WMAI members still target World Championships

WADO Martial Arts Ireland remain hopeful that a number of their members will get the opportunity to compete on the international stage this year.

While the WUKF European Champion-ships, scheduled to take place in Italy in September, have been scrapped because of the Covid-19 outbreak, the World Championships in Poland have been pushed back from July to September.

Sean O’Brien hopes to see some of his WMAI members in World Championship action this year

WMAI President Sean O’Brien is hopeful a number of students from his WMAI outlets in Newcastle and Rathangan will get the chance to compete for global honours after a number of other events have been affected by the pandemic.

The WUKF Professional Karate Gala, due to be staged in the National Basketball Arena on May 8, is now likely to be instead run on October 11- the day after the WMAI Four Nations Karate Championship Cup.

“We were also due to travel to a couple of international club events in Leeds (October) and Manchester (August) and they have all gone by the wayside” said O’Brien.
