You better watch out!

THE streets of Kingswood Heights were thronged with people on Saturday afternoon as Santa weaved through the estate in his sleigh – with his band of elves – in a magical display for the residents.

The Kingswood Heights Santa Sleigh Ride was organised by local residents Natasha Doyle and Sharlene Kennedy, in a bid to lift the spirits of the people in the estate after the difficulties posed by the pandemic.

The event was warmly received by residents, with younger attendees being particularly taken by the glittering display.

Organiser Natasha Doyle told The Echo: “The streets were lined with people, young and old.

“There were people with camping chairs and blankets, and kids running after the sleigh, cheering.

“We had a whole gaggle of children following the sleigh through the estate. It went on for two-and-a-half hours. It was phenomenal.

“We just wanted to lift the spirits of the community, and we got lots of amazing feedback and so many thank yous.”

A total of €1,684 was raised for the parents’ association of St Kilian’s Junior National School during the course of the event, as their usual means of fundraising, such as bake sales and markets, couldn’t be held because of the pandemic.

“It was absolutely incredible to raise that much,” said Natasha. “Especially because this year has been so tough for the parents’ association. They haven’t been able to fundraise like they normally would.

“They said it was one of the highest-earning events of the year for them, and it’ll go to the school.”

Looking ahead, Natasha said this year’s Kingswood Heights Sleigh Ride was such a success that there are plans to hold an even larger Christmas event again next year, involving surrounding areas like Kilnamanagh and Belgard.

Reflecting on how the sleigh ride went, Natasha said: “The turnout was incredible. It was an incredibly joyous evening and it brought so many heartfelt smiles, laughs and giggles.”
