Young Hayes continues to shine

At only nine-years-old, the Tallaght competitor has already travelled to Sarrians, France where she competed in the European Champion-ships and made the Finals, finishing sixth overall in Europe.

The 4th Class student at Saint Marys National School, is currently All-Ireland Champion, Irish National Number One, Leinster Champion, and British National Number Two.

With the 2019 season already underway, Hayes has just returned from the UK where she competed in the opening round of the 2019 British National Series.

After three wins in her qualifying motos, she carded a runner-up finish in the final, just missing out on victory after a great battle with Latvian rider Lotte Etmane.

The 10-round series will see Hayes travel around the UK over the year banging bars with some of the best riders all in the hunt for that Number One plate.

As part of training over the winter, Hayes has attended sessions at the HSBC National Cycling Centre in Manchester and raced there at the Winter Indoor Series.

While silverware was not on her agenda, Hayes stepped up to the Girls 11-12 and Boys 9-10 divisions  to improve her strength and skill level, mixing it with some of the best riders in the UK.

And the training clearly paid off as she finished fifth out of 60 boys at the final round.

Among the other big races on Hayes’ calendar this year are the European Champ-ionships in Valmiera, Latvia before she then turns her attention to the World Champion-ships which take place on the Zolder track in Belgium in July.

The Irish BMX National Series, which comprises of eight rounds, is due to start in Lisburn on April 6/7.
