Amazon data centre site nears completion

THE state-of-the-art Amazon data centres located on the Greenhills Road look set to be near completion as the Seattle-based company continues to invest in Tallaght.
Work began on the former Shinko warehouse site in February after the old warehouse was demolished and the finishing touches to the data centre project seem to be taking place.
Its sister site, once home to the former Tesco warehouse, was bought by the internet retail giant back in 2011 for €7.5 million and work finished on the data centre just before work on the former Shinko site began.
As confirmed by The Echo back in July, Amazon have also acquired the former Jacob’s site on the Belgard Road with work expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The site had been laying vacant since 2008, and the new development is expected to be a major boost to the local economy.
Around 50 jobs were created with the development of the former Shinko site, while the development of the former Jacob’s site is expected to generate hundreds of jobs during construction and afterwards.
The company currently employs more than 1,400 people throughout the country in its Dublin and Cork operations.
The development of the Jacob’s site was welcomed by councillors and senior officials in South Dublin County Council following the confirmation that Amazon had taken it over.
Amazon have created hundreds of jobs throughout Dublin in recent years, and moved its Dublin Development Centre to a 69,000 sq.ft. site in Burlington Plaza in January.
The company recently had its 20th anniversary and last weekend celebrated great success at the Emmy awards as its original series Transparent picked up a number of awards, cementing the company’s place against online streaming services such as Netflix.
