Area should be more wheelchair accessible
COUNCILLORS have asked South Dublin County Council to look into making Clondalkin a more wheelchair accessible town.
At the recent area meeting, Councillors Kenneth Egan and Emer Higgins asked the council to conduct a full accessibility survey of Clondalkin Village, and provide guidelines to private carparks who install “inaccessible accessible car spaces”.

They said wheelchair users find Clondalkin difficult to navigate in comparison with Tallaght and Lucan.
In response, SDCC said they do not have the resources to carry out a full accessibility survey of the village.
The council said the provision of disabled car parking spaces on foot of a planning permission must comply with regulations – otherwise private work on private sites is “wholly a private matter”.
Meanwhile, Councillor Mark Ward forwarded a motion requesting SDCC adopt a pilot programme that recognises individual estates and community groups for being wheelchair friendly.
In response to the motion, SDCC said their area engineer is available to meet representatives of disability groups on site to identify issues.
The said the issue of wheelchair friendly estates will be forwarded to the Disability Liaison/Access Officer for her attention.
