ST PATRICK’S Athletic have announced that Liam Buckley has stepped down as head coach of the first team by mutual consent.

A former player with the Inchicore side, he had two spells as manager of the Saints, returning to the post for the second time back in 2012.

The following year he led them to the League of Ireland title before bridging a 53-year gap since they had last won the FAI Cup.

He and the team enjoyed back-to-back success in the EA Sports Cup in 2015 and 16, but have found the going tough in the last couple of seasons, having just managed to survive a relegation dog fight in 2017.

While improving this year, they saw their push for a top-four finish dealt, pretty much, a fatal blow following their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bohemians last Saturday.

A statement by the club read: “St Patrick’s Athletic would like to announce that Liam Buckley has resigned from his position as first team manager by mutual consent.

“Club chairman Garrett Kelleher would like to thank Liam for his numerous successes during his time here over the past number of years and in particular for bringing his brand of free flowing and passing football to St Pat’s, which has brought much entertainment and enjoyment to those who witnessed it.

“On his part, Liam would like to thank all involved with St Pat’s for the support given to him during his seven year reign and wishes the club the best of luck in the future.”
