Careers seminar helps young students focus on their future career prospects

MORE than 1,000 Fifth-Class students from Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Palmerstown descended on IT Tallaght last Friday for an interactive careers seminar.
Organised by South Dublin County Partnership, with support from IT Tallaght, the seminar innovatively provided students with access to speakers from each of the 40 plus careers that featured.
Rather than just pick up information, students were given the chance to listen to people from across a diverse mix of career paths, including pharmaceutical, radiotherapy, nursing, technology, broadcasting, social services, An Garda Síochána, writing, and arts, such as tattooing.
Miriam McNamee, education officers with South Dublin County Partnership, told The Echo: “The seminar was really well received and most of the seminars were packed out.
“We felt there was a need for this type of careers event and thought it would be beneficial for young people to listen to the stories and experiences of people working in a job that is of interest to them.
“It gave young people a different focus than just CAO points and they learned of the many different pathways into various careers.”
Schools that attended on the day included Tallaght Community School, Killinarden Community School, St Aidan’s Community School, Brookfield, Firhouse Community College, Coláiste de hÍde, Balrothery, and St Mark’s Community College in Springfield.
Clondalkin schools Coláiste Bríde, Collinstown Park Community College, St Kevin’s Community College and Deansrath Community College also attended, alongside Adamstown Community College in Lucan and Pobalscoil Isolde in Palmerstown.
