Old Bawn students just wild about Junk Kouture – and TV’s Glenda Gilson

By Laura Lyne

THE students of Old Bawn Community School were treated to a surprised visit from TV presenter Glenda Gilson last week, as she made her way to Old Bawn to announce that fifth year student Lily Rose Chatham and her Uptown Punk teammates had made it to the final of the Junk Kouture competition.

Sixteen-year-old Lily Rose and her classmates Grace Nestor and Helana Paul Maliakal were announced as wild card entries to the national final of the competition following the regional final on March 3, after they failed to make it through to the national competition.

Speaking to The Echo, Lily Rose said: “I was absolutely delighted when we were told we were through on the wild card – it was a complete surprise.

“My mam and my art teacher knew that they were coming to announce the wild card, and told me that The Echo was coming to take pictures so I’d be dressed in the outfit

“I’m so excited, the final is on April 14 and right now we’re just focusing on the bit of performance we have to do as part of the modelling of the outfit on the night.

“The regional final was really good. I got to see all the different outfits from other schools, and when I saw them I didn’t think we had much of a chance because there were a lot of amazing ones that didn’t get through.

“I’m thinking of entering next year’s competition, but it’s going to be tough with it being my Leaving Cert year. I’d have to design and make a lot of it over the summer, but I really enjoy the whole process.

“It’s a great competition, and I’ll be able to use the outfit as part of my portfolio when I try to get into art college after my Leaving Certificate.”

As part of the competition, Lily Rose and her team had to design an outfit from recyclable materials, and have named their outfit theme Uptown Punk.

Uptown Punk includes a mixture of styles inspired by steampunk, anime cartoon and the Clara Oswald character from the Victorian Doctor Who episodes.

The Junk Kouture finals will take place on April 14 in the Three Arena, with Uptown Punk featuring as the Eastern Regional Wild Card entry.
