CHERRY Orchard Equine Centre is aiming to support 50 youths per year in secure employment by 2022.

It is one of the objectives contained in a strategic five-year plan launched last week by the Cherry Orchard Equine Education & Training Centre.

The five-year plan, ‘Jobs Changes lives’, contains a wide range of objectives, including the provision of micro-enterprise incubation facilities on site, promotion of a local employment network, refurbishments and improvements to the campus, and the introduction of a number of new programmes.

Established in 2003 as a response to deep-rooted educational disadvantage in Cherry Orchard, the centre operates four main services, all of which are interconnected.

This includes Cherry Orchard Community Training Centre, Cherry Orchard Integrated Youth Service, CODY Garda Youth Diversion Project, and a community horse-riding school.

Dedicated to supporting young people in Cherry Orchard, some of their graduates have gone on to be employed as jockeys and in leading equine industry jobs at home and abroad.

According to the report, they continue to encounter youths with high-level needs despite having participated in mainstream education up until fifth and sixth year.

The centre continues to be astounded as to how many people can progress so far within the education system and still have numeracy and literacy levels analogous to sixth-class primary school children.

The development of a five-year plan was implemented to further develop services and programmes available to local youths at the campus.

During the next strategic stage, the centre intend to expand the provision of employment-related supports for young people and integrate them into their existing services.
