Residents up in arms at opening of cul-de-sac

LONG-TERM residents in a cul-de-sac, say they were shocked to discover their road was to be opened up as part of a nearby housing development.
Residents on Elmdale Crescent say they initially thought there would be a walkway on their road – linked to the new Elmdale development of 53 homes, which is currently being built.

Dublin City Council decided to build an additional 19 homes adjacent to the site – nine of these will now be linked to Elmdale Crescent.
However, residents on the cul-de-sac are unsure why the back entrance, used during construction, isn’t retained as an entrance for the new development.
“They are building houses left right and centre, but nothing for the children,” said Ciara May, a resident of Elmdale Crescent for 33 years.
“We are not against housing but don’t want the road opened up. I only found out by looking at the plans in the Civic Centre. It would make more sense to use the entrance beside the Bungalow. The contractor I spoke to at the site agreed.”
Her mother Marie May said: “It’s a safe area for our kids, who play on the road. It’s a lovely cul-de-sac. We know who is coming in and out. One of the neighbours has a kid with ADHD. The last two houses on the road will have no room if it goes ahead.”
Dublin City Council did not respond to The Echo at the time of going to print.
Cllr Daithí Doolan said: “The increased number of houses was agreed last August. I am aware of concerns about the cul-de-sac. I would encourage the city council to continue to fully engage with local residents.
“It is essential that their genuine concerns are fully addressed. I look forward to these houses being completed and families moving in in early 2019.”
