Childcare facilities face up to challenges

CHILDCARE services which remain open during the summer face an operational challenge, with a significant drop-off in demand but a determination to retain services for parents.

One such facility is Dublin West Childcare & Learning Services (DWCLS), which operates four childcare services in Clondalkin and Lucan, including at the Ace Enterprise Business Park in Bawnogue.

Established in 2011 to incorporate and manage existing childcare services in West Dublin, DWCLS operate the Limetree Crèche in Bawnogue and also have their main office on the first floor of the enterprise centre.

Aishling Kelly, Manager of the four DWCLS centres, says the summer months are about “trying to balance” their services.

“In summer there tends to be a drop-off, which puts a strain on the business, with reduced income, but we try to provide for people who use the service throughout the year,” said Aishling.

Limetree is open throughout the year for parents, while opening hours and age groups vary at sister facilities – Kozy Kids in Deansrath and Beechtree Community Childcare in Balgaddy.

Aishling continued: “We’re getting ready now for back-to-school, and there is a gradual increase with schools starting back on different days. DWCLS provides a high-quality service with staff holding a minimum Fetac Level 5, we aim for a Fetac Level 6, and some have degrees.

“In Limetree, we would cater for up to 59 kids – most are local, but we also have parents who work in the area.”

DWCLS is a registered charity, and pride themselves on offering “affordable high quality childcare and learning services”.

Their ethos is to deliver a caring, happy and stimulating environment where children can develop as individuals socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally.
