WORKS on the upgraded junction at Citywest are due to be complete by the end of February, South Dublin County Council has confirmed.

Since work commenced last summer, motorists have been subjected to heavy traffic and tailbacks in an area that clocks up a high volume of through-traffic on a daily basis.

It is due to these high volumes of traffic and the new housing and business developments in the area that the roundabout at the junction of Fortunestown Lane and the former N82 is being removed and replaced with a four-way, fully signalised junction with pedestrian and cycling facilities.

This junction lies on a local road network that provides a link between Tallaght, Citywest and Saggart, and provides an access route to the Citywest Business Campus, Citywest Shopping Centre, Citywest Hotel, TLC Nursing Home, high density housing estates, schools, the Red Luas Line, Lidl on Fortunestown Lane and the N7.

In a comment to The Echo, South Dublin County Council said: “The roundabout junction at Citywest had reached capacity and with the ongoing new housing and business developments around the area the junction had to be upgraded to meet the current and future projected traffic demands.

“It is important to note that the previous roundabout junction had no safe crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians whereas the upgraded junction will have safe signalised crossing facilities for same.

“There are businesses and schools in the area and with these safe crossing facilities at the upgraded junction people will be able to walk and cycle thus reducing pressure on the road network.”

According to the council, works were originally scheduled to be finished last November but due to unforeseen site conditions the completion date has been pushed out by three months.

“The contractor has traffic management in place to facilitate these works which is constantly monitored and updated,” the council told The Echo.

“It is the council’s desire to carry out these works with minimal disruptions to residents and businesses in the area and we apologise for any inconveniences caused.”

Works are expected to be complete by the end of February.
