THE united approach to education adopted by Citywise in Jobstown has landed the centre two awards in a national competition – and a nice start to 2017, with a prize presentation of €1,000.

The progressive education centre entered a short video into the Better Together competition, which gave community and voluntary organisations the opportunity to showcase their work, demonstrate transparency and recruit new supporters.

After being shortlisted from hundreds of worthy entries, Citywise went on to win its category, which was decided on by the judges.

Citywise also won the People’s Award, after its video story received the most votes by members of the public.

The video was led by three European volunteers, David Andres, Ricardo Ramirez and Marina Montes, who are working at Citywise for one year under the European Voluntary Service (EVS) – which is funded by the European Commission.

Christopher Smith, of Citywise Education, said: “The video was great, it really highlighted volunteering and how people bring different attributes and talents to Citywise – which combine to make Citywise quality rich.

“As part of our category win, we also won a cheque for €1,000, which is a nice start to 2017.”

He added: “This money will go towards the development of a dedicated STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths] building at Citywise next year.

“We are trying to encourage young people to get into STEM subjects and prepare them for a career in it.

“There’s a shortage of skilled people in this field and lots of companies and industries looking for staff, so we want to give young people from Tallaght the opportunity to go for these jobs.”

Based on Fortunestown Way, Citywise encourages young people to develop their talents, in education, sports and other social interests and clubs while raising the aspirations of young people growing up in underserved communities and opening up possibilities for further education.
