Civic Comedy Club: Paul Marsh has real desire for variety this season

Tallaght welcomes the summer with humour with a new edition of the Civic Comedy Club launching this Saturday, May 27, at 8.15pm, at the Civic Theatre, reports Sihame Saady.

Included on the programme is the genuine humour of Kevin Spain, the storytelling, full of energy, by Sharon Mannion and the new talent of the Irish scene Stephen Mullan.

All this fun will be presented and supported by Paul Marsh, the multi award winning Irish comedian with the audience invited to laugh without moderation.

Native Dubliner, with Tallaght in his heart for 30 years, Paul Marsh, master of ceremonies of this new edition of the Civic Comedy Club, had a real desire for variety for this new season.

“When it came to booking acts for the Civic, my priority was to book a variety of styles and experience.

Over the coming months we will be hosting some of the best and experienced comedians on the Irish comedy scene, mixed with some of the new up and coming acts,” he explained.

Fireman stationed on the Belgard Road, comedian, DJ and promoter of comedians, the artist intends to fulfil his duties as master of ceremonies with all the importance that his role requires.

He admits that “the MC has the most important job in a comedy club show because they are in charge of how the night runs”. Not only will he be in charge of presenting the artists but also to build up an atmosphere while getting to know the audience.

The actor has a real connection with every artist participating in this edition. He met Karl Spain at a stand-up comedy club in Glasgow and they have been “best of friends from then on”.

Paul is full of praise for him: “Karl has been a mentor to me down through the years and he’s always the first act I book when I promote a show. He’s and all-rounder. One liners, stories and best of all, chatting to the crowd and having a laugh with them.”

Fan of Shannon Mannion, he first saw her at the Kilkenny Cats Laugh festival about 8 years ago. “She does musical comedy, storytelling and improv. She has a contagious energy that’s not to be missed,” explains Paul.

Paul is also a guardian of the new generation on the comedy scene as Stephen Mullan illustrates in the selection of artists. According to Paul, he is an artist with enormous talent and potential.

Paul speaks proudly of Stephen: “He has been on tour with Deirdre O Kane, Joanne McNally, Jason Byrne and Des Bishop recently. He has two podcasts on the go and he is planning his own tour later in the year, as well as doing a month in Edinburgh. I’m chuffed to have a comedian on the first night that I know will be selling out Vicar street in a few years. Guaranteed!”

As well as hosting the Civic Comedy Club, Paul is working on a show to be staged during 2024. For the lucky ones, they will be able to see it at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Finally, he is also hosting a podcast and working on two other similar formats.
