Also known as ‘The Race of Champions’, this event sees more than 60 racers from all over Ireland competing across eight different classes with the presentation of the John Brennan Award among the highlight of the day.

Named in honour of Johnny Brennan who was involved in karting for more than 30 years and the winner of many European British and Irish titles, the award is always given to a driver who is seen as living up to the standard Johnny would have expected from a kart racer.

This year they chose Fair Play and Sportsmanship as the basis for the award and it was 11-year-old Coby who was deemed the worthy winner.

Originally from Clondalkin, Coby is not the only member of the Coby family to race karts, her father Gary having raced competitively and who is now running the family race team while her uncle Aaron still competes in the IAME X30 Senior class.

Back when Gary first started out racing, it was Johnny Brennan who took him under his wing and offered guidance.

It is a great tribute to Johnny’s hard work and dedication to the sport that the daughter of a driver he mentored should win this award.

Speaking about the decision to present Coby with the award the Irish Karting Club’s timekeepers highlighted the fact that in the three years she has been racing, they have never heard a complaint over the radio from marshals or officials about her for bad driving standards or pushing another competitor off track.

Now in her final year in the Cadet class, Coby has not only proven to be a fair driver but also a potentially successful one having notched up three wins so far in this year’s Motorsport Ireland Karting Championship.

Only one driver has recorded more race wins and Coby is currently sitting third on the points table with just three rounds remaining, the first of which takes place in Athboy on August 16.
