A SECOND-year student from Coláiste de hÍde has been chosen as one of the finalists of the Fighting Words writing competition, and is set to see her short story published in The Irish Times.

Michaela Ní Choinnealáin, who is part of Sorcha de Búrca's second-year English class, will see her short story published in the national newspaper later this month.

School príomhoide, Deiric Mac an Bhaird , told The Echo: “Nuair a léigh mé gearrscéal Michaela rinne sé impreisiúin mór orm.

“Thaispeán sé cruatan, iargúlacht agus díogras. Is gearrscéal cumhachtach é. Chun scríobhneoireacht cruthaitheach a spreagadh chuir mé isteach ar an gcómórtas “Fighting Words” san Irish Times.

“Déirigh leis an rang obair íontach cruthaitheach a dhéanamh. Déirigh le Michaela sa chomórtas agus comhghairdeas dí. Táimid go léir an-bhródúil aistí i gColáiste de hÍde.”

“When I first read Michaela’s short story, I was so impressed by the sense of desperation, isolation and struggle that it portrayed. It was a powerful piece.

“When I came across the Fighting Words competition I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to get the entire class writing creatively.

“Michaela entered her short story and was very proud of her presentation. Here we are today with her short story about to be published in a segment for The Irish Times.

“I and Coláiste de hÍde are proud of her and all the hard work she put in. Michaela is talented and creative and enjoys her writing.”
