Cors cruise by Weston to stay top of the table

CORINTHIANS men’s first team stormed to an emphatic 6-1 victory over Weston ahead of what is a huge week for the current Leinster League Division One leaders.

Despite a more gritty display by Weston than the final scoreline suggests, the Lucan side collapsed under a late surge by Cors that produced four goals in the game’s final quarter last Saturday in Griffeen Park.

The result served to extend the visitors’ perfect league run so far to eight from eight and leaves them on a sound footing ahead of their top-of-the-table clash with YMCA on Saturday which will be followed by another big league tie against Clontarf three days later and their first ever Irish Senior Cup semi-final appearance away to Banbridge on February 19.

David Howard propelled them out of the blocks last weekend with a well-executed short corner just ten minutes in before Glen Holmes doubled their lead midway through the half.

Division One props Weston held strong for the remainder of the half and even managed to reduce their arrears early in the second half through Gary Ruddock.

But Cors’ experience and fitness began to tell and they raced out of sight with goals from Howard, Holmes, Jack Perdue and Robbie Clarke.

Andrew Sutton turned in another fine performance at central midfield for the current table toppers as did Ben Murphy in defence.

“It’s all about momentum” said Corinthians Coach Trevor Dagg. “The players are looking forward to a special week because it will be only the second time in the history of the club that we play in an Irish Senior Cup semi-final” he added.

Having missed out on securing a place in the Men’s EY Hockey League last season, Corinthians are looking for a berth in the top ranks.

“I think last year, with a young team, they were a bit shocked and didn’t really handle it well” explained Dagg.

“But we’re a bit more experienced now and this year we’ve brought in Jonny Bruton, an ex-Irish international. He’s a very experienced player and that really helps us” the Corinthians Coach told The Echo.
