#COYBIB: Local councillors give their predictions ahead of Sunday’s final

By Brendan Grehan

IT’S THAT time of year again, September Sundays, the Dubs are in Croke Park. Jim Gavin is going for his third All-Ireland. Is it a done deal. The Echo went out and asked some local councillors who they will be supporting on Sunday. Not surprisingly, most are supporting the Dubs but we were able to find one Mayo supporter.

A longtime Dublin supporter, Tallaght Councillor Mick Duff will be on the Cusack Stand on Sunday. Sunday can’t come quick enough for Cllr Duff.

Jim Gavin September 2016

He said: “I can’t wait. I’m really looking forward to it. We got a small taste last night with the ‘All-Ireland Sunday’ programme on tv. I’m absolutely dying for Sunday to come. I’m chomping at the bit”.

Cllr Duff believes that this is one of the best Dublin teams ever.

He told The Echo: “Since January when they started in the league, they have been absolutely brilliant. Now on Sunday we want them to put in a performance worthy of the team that they are.”

Cllr Duff believes that Jim Gavin and his team won’t let the county down.

He added: “I just want to wish Jim and the lads the best of luck on Sunday and we will be supporting them from the Cusack Stand. “

A Season-ticket holder, Cllr Duff is a life-long Dublin fan and has been with the team all the way.

He said: “I will be in Croke Park on Sunday. I’m a season-ticket holder so I was there in January when the rain was running down your back.”

Councillor William Lavelle, a Mayo man living in Lucan says that Lucan is full of Mayo supporters.

He said: “You would be surprised at the amount of Mayo flags around Lucan and West Dublin. There are a lot of Mayo supporters around here. Obviously if you are from the West and go back there on a regular basis, it makes a big difference on your travelling time if you don’t have to go through the city centre or use the M50 when going to the West.”

Cllr Lavelle said that while Dublin are the favourites, he believes it will be a close match.

He said : “There is no doubt that Dublin are the favourites. I think it will be a very close match and it will be a great contest”.

Over in Rathfarnham, Councillor Deirdre O’Donovan, a volunteer with Ballyboden St Enda’s has her sky blue jersey ready for Sunday.

She told The Echo: “I’m so excited. I can hardly wait until Sunday. As a proud volunteer with Ballyboden St Enda’s, I will be rooting for Michael Daragh Macauley and the team. We can put our differences with St Jude’s behind us and support the team.”

Cllr O’Donovan is confident that Jim Gavin’s men can bring Sam home again.

She said: “I think it may well be close but Mayo are for the taking again. As Michael Daragh Macauley says ‘Mayo is for sandwiches’.”
