Coyne completes stunning Irish Open treble

NIAMH Coyne completed a breaststroke treble at the 2022 Swim Ireland Irish Open Championship this evening after she secured gold over the 200m distance at the National Aquatic Centre.

Her finishing time of 2:27.40 was not only good enough to stave off the fierce challenge of runner-up, Molly Mayne (2:29.50) and third place, Ellie McCartney (2:31.54), but also marked another European Championship consideration time for the Tallaght and National Centre swimmer.

This victory, followed hot on the heels of her triumph in the 50m Breaststroke on Thursday when she raced home in a time of 32.37.

The day before, she had ignited her Irish Open programme with gold in the 100m Breaststroke, her time of 1:07.83 having also earned her consideration for the upcoming Europeans in Rome this coming August.

Delighted with the performance of the Irish swimmers at this year’s Open, Swim Ireland National Performance Director Jon Rudd said, “The five days of competition here in Dublin have provided us with a great return to the business end of our sport with some strong and highly promising racing noted in every session.

“Following the Olympic Games, we had nine athletes pre-selected to our national teams for the summer benchmark meets this season and for many, training into the summer rather than competing at this time was their preferred option.

“Alongside those pre-selected, we have an additional 11 athletes that have put themselves into a position where they can be nominated for selection for individual events for one or more of our national teams in July and August, alongside a further group of athletes who can be considered for Irish relays” he added.
