Creating a society that gives all citizens equal opportunity

THE social diversity of South Dublin County, and the supports and services in place locally to reduce social exclusion and poverty, will be showcased and celebrated from November 14 to November 20.

Social Inclusion Week is back for another packed programme of events, which highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty across local communities, and to promote an understanding of social inclusion and diversity.

Maria Finn, Social Inclusion Officer with the council, said: “Each year there has been a steady growth of strategic partners from the community and other agencies, increasing the level of participation and the quality of events.

“The number of groups and communities engaging with the event has also increased dramatically.”

She added: “South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.

“Social Inclusion Week provides us with the platform to highlight social inclusion initiatives and promote active citizenship.

Social Inclusion is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life.”

Ms Finn also stressed how social inclusion is “everyone’s business”.

During Social Inclusion Week, which is being launched by County Mayor Guss O’Connell with special guest and RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan this Monday, November 14, a vibrant and diverse programme of events will be staged.

A snapshot of these events include Literacy Awareness Training, a mental health workshop for young people, Intercultural Day Celebrating Diversity, craft workshops, performing arts, dance workshops, computer classes, traditional Irish dancing, English language courses, yoga, eco-therapy walks in Massy Woods, floristry workshop, a tea dance for older people in the Red Cow Inn and much more.

Ahead of the launch, County Mayor Guss O’Connell said: “Social Inclusion is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life.

“South Dublin County Council remains committed to sustaining and enhancing efforts to improve the quality of life of all residents in the county.

“I encourage everyone to get involved in the planned activities and to help make Social Inclusion Week 2016 a success”.

At the launch of Social Inclusion Week, which runs from November 14 to 20, the Divine Mercy National School Orchestra, Lucan, and RAMS [Retired Active Mens’ Social] in Rhythm will provide the musical backdrop.
