Demand for skips has increased dramatically

DEMAND for skips has increased dramatically in recent weeks with Covid-19 sparking a clearout in people’s homes.
All the big waste companies in the area, Thorntons, Greyhound and Panda, have reported an increase in skip hire to The Echo.
Parkwest based Thorntons Recycling and Skip.ie have seen a 35 per cent spike in the number of online skip orders, and a 42 per cent increase in phone skip orders in the last month.
“From conversations with our customers we have found that this increase is primarily due to people staying at home due to the covid crisis combined with the good weather,” said Brendan Kildea, Marketing Manager, Thorntons Recycling.
“Most of the skip orders are for clearing out a shed, tidying up the garden or decluttering the house. We find there are far more calls coming in about price inquiries, and availability of skips.”
Ballymount based waste and recycling company Panda, who took over A1 Skips, also reported a “large increase in casual skip orders in recent weeks.”
A spokesperson for the company said the hire period is usually between three – five days.
“Wait time depends on availability and at present or during high demand periods, we aim for deliveries to be completed within 48 hours of an order being placed,” said Panda.
Thorntons are currently running a “10 per cent off April” offer on skip hires via their website www.skip.ie.
Mr Kildea said the call centre has seen an increase in requests for next day delivery and a “sharp rise” in mini (2 cubic yard capacity), midi (4 cubic yard capacity), and standard skip (6 cubic yard capacity) orders.
Thorntons advise homeowners that hazardous waste, paints, and food waste are not allowed in skips. The Echo contacted Greyhound for comment.
