DESPITE a widespread campaign which involved the collection of 2,300 signatures, the hammer has fallen on Dodsboro Post Office in Lucan, reports Brendan Grehan.

It is due to close and the post office’s business will be transferred to SuperValu in Lucan which is a 25 minute walk away.

Dodsboro Post Office will close its doors

Angus Laverty, Public Affairs Manager in An Post told The Echo: “The Post Office is moving to SuperValu Lucan. No timescale as of yet but we are working to ensure a smooth transfer to the new location. We have no  further comment to make at this time.”

In September, The Echo reported that the group “Save Dodsboro Post Office” delivered 2,300 signatures to the CEO of An Post, David McRedmond.

The group also sent a letter to the Minister for Communications, Denis Naughten TD.

Councillor Danny O’Brien from Sinn Fein described An Post’s decision as “regrettable”. He told The Echo that the move was “a commercial decision by An Post”.

Cllr O’Brien added: “Basically there was a lot of cross-party support to keep the Post Office in Dodsboro open. An Post have now decided to move it to SuperValu which is at the other end of Lucan.

“A lot of old people who live in the Dodsboro are going to be affected by this. It is regrettable. The Post Office has been there a long, long, time. It is a commercial decision by An Post.”

Councillor Ruth Nolan from Independents 4 Change also condemned the decision.

She told The Echo: “I am very upset with this decision. There is a lot of old people in the Dodsboro area who are going to be affected by this decision. We campaigned for the Post Office to stay open. An Post have decided to close it.”

Cllr O’Brien, Cllr Nolan, Fine Gael Councillor William Lavelle, Fianna Fail TD John Curran and Fine Gael TD Frances Fitzgerald all campaigned to keep Dodsboro Post Office open.
