INFORMAL art therapy classes for people affected by cancer, both patients and their family and friends, are being held weekly in the Tallaght Cancer Support Group’s premises in Tallaght village.

The centre, which is based in Trustus House on Main Street, is a welcoming, warm and friendly space for anybody affected by cancer, with people invited to drop-in for a chat, a cuppa or a bit of doodling.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the support group offers a diverse range of free services including Doodle Art with Dave from 10.30am to 12.30pm and Crafts with Crafty Marie from 12 noon to 1pm every Monday.

During a visit to the centre, participants told The Echo how the art and crafts classes offer them a creative form of therapy in a safe place where they can relax and open-up.

They also stressed how the fun and informal art classes helps them to slow things down and re-focus their attention, while being able to chat with people who may be going through a similar experience with their illness – or with a family member or friend.

Margaret Dennehy, founder of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group, told The Echo: “Art is very therapeutic whether you are ill or not, and is a great way to relax.

“The doddle and crafts classes give people and their families some time out from their stresses and gives them the chance to do something different and relaxing together.”

The doodle and crafts classes are provided for free and anybody interested in taking part is encouraged to drop in on Mondays or call the centre for more information.

The drop-in centre is open in Trustus House every Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10am to 2pm – learn about the other free services and classes, such as yoga, reflexology, counselling, a group choir and more.

Tallaght Cancer Support Group is also recruiting volunteers, who get full training.
