During the meeting, it was confirmed that Jim accepted the civic honour and Fianna Fáil councillor Charlie O’Connor requested that the honour be conferred ahead of the general election.

The honouring event is expected to take place early next year, with the earliest date possible likely to be in February.

During the discussion, Sinn Féin councollor Cathal King also called for South Dublin County Council to congratulate UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor, whose family moved to Lucan from Crumlin when he was a teenager.

He called the mixed martial arts fighter’s 13-second, record-breaking knockout win over Jose Aldo a “huge achievement”, which was met with agreement from the councillors in the chamber.

Meanwhile, Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh announced that a civic reception will take place to mark the achievements of Conor McGregor who won the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Featherweight World Title last Saturday, in Las Vegas, USA. He defeated reigning champion José Aldo in 13 seconds in what was the fastest championship victory in UFC history.

Ardmhéara Críona Ní Dhálaigh said “I am delighted to honour Conor McGregor, World Champion, in his home city of Dublin and acknowledge his wonderful achievement in the sport of UFC. He became World Champion in such stunning style and was watched by many Irish people in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Comhghairdeas le Conor ar an éacht íontach seo. Curadh reatha an Domhain ó mBaile Átha Cliath is ea é.

“It was important for us to contact Conor and his management team before making any public or media announcements and to make sure that he would welcome the reception and also ascertain his availability.

“We have held discussions with his team and are delighted to now be in a position to make this announcement. We will hold the reception in City Hall towards the end of January 2016 and further details will be announced as planning progesses.”
