Dublin GAA football manager Jim Gavin was on hand to launch the annual Laurels Charity Crew Santa Cycle, at Our Lady’s Children Hospital last Monday.

Organisers are expecting up to 1,000 cyclists to take part in this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday, December 3.

The colourful event starts in the Phoenix Park and sees Santa clad cyclists travel to Clondalkin, via assistance from the Garda Traffic Corp and many local volunteers.

The Laurels Charity Crew, which started nine years ago by Laurels bar manager Damien Long and head barman Denis McCarthy, host two cycle events throughout the year.

The charity is in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and has become so successful that by next year, a realistic target of €1 million may be realised.

“The Santa Cycle is a fairly spectacular looking event,” said Damien Long.

“Everyone is in their Santa gear. We get great support from gardai and volunteers, which helps take us through busy city streets on the quays, back to Clondalkin Village, via Our Lady’s Hospital.

“We are still taking on more cyclists. Anyone who wants to join the Santa Cycle can sign up in the Laurels, or do it online.”
