Encouraging women to play more golf

A GOLF club in Brittas will be running a programme beginning in April to encourage more women to play golf reports Stephen Farrell.

‘Women into golf’ will begin on Tuesday April 09 at 6.30 pm at Slade Valley golf club and will run for eight weeks.

“We are trying to encourage women to get into golf,” said Mary Cleary who looks after the ‘Get into Golf’ programme and is a former lady captain.

The club are trying to target a small group to sign up to the programme.

“Those who sign up will be able to avail of four lessons with a pro-golfer, Declan and an extra lesson will be optional.

“They can also avail of practice rounds with the volunteer members from the ladies’ section,” said Mary.

Those who sign up to the programme will also be offered an attractive membership deal with the golf club.

“There is also a flexi membership deal for those who may be only able to go out once or twice a week,” said Mary.

Slade Valley has a small ladies’ membership which has its benefits.

“There is an infinite capacity to get on the timesheet.

“There is also equal access to the timesheet between men and women and there is mutual respect between men and women when there are competitions on,” said Mary.

Mary got into golf in 2016 at Slade Valley golf club.

“I got hooked on it, the environment, the beauty of the course, the atmosphere in Slade, the kindred spirits.

“The social aspect is very important, you make friends, and hitting one good shot will bring you back the next day,” said Mary.

There are also positive physical health benefits to golf as well as the social aspect.

“It has given me a very fulfilling social life, I’m a busy person but it’s a big part of my life.

“I love going out on the golf course on a Spring or Autum day, the silence, the views. It’s good for one’s soul, mind and body,” said Mary.

Margaret O’Connor started playing golf through the ‘Get into Golf’ programme.

“I’m enjoying it, there’s a great atmosphere, there’s a very strong women’s club,” said Margaret.

While there is no pressure involved there can be as much of a competitive element involved as a programme participant may wish.

“There is no pressure, but you can be as competitive as you want to be.

“They enter a lot of interclub competitions, they do well for a small cohort,” said Margaret.

Those who would like to sign up for the programme may either call (086) 6014600 or e-mail: proshop@sladevalleygolfclub.ie .
