Entering the special circle of crochet

We attend a lot of events here at The Echo but it has to said, the Christmas crochet competition is officially the toughest gig of the year, with this reporter, aided by photographer Joe McCartney, finding it very difficult to choose winners from the diverse and highly skilled selection of crochet products on display.

Not only are the items beautifully made but they are unique and innovative creations which have their own festive, novelty stamp about them.

From children’s clothes to decorations, crochet wreaths to snowman, the display is a credit to the eighty women who attend the centre’s crochet classes every Monday and Tuesday, with the classes not just a way for participants to learn a new skill but also to make friends and have a laugh.

Centre manager Deirdre Cleary told The Echo: “The crochet classes are an amazing social outlet for the ladies who attend and, alongside making friends, they make some pretty impressive crochet pieces.

“Many of the winners of the crochet competition are new mem-bers, and I think that shows the level of skill among the longer members and the teacher, Phyllis Royal.”

She added: “The relationship between all of the members is great, they really get along and most weeks the class will turn into a sing-song.”

There were plenty of Christmas songs to be heard at the competition on Tuesday, all washed down with tea and mince pieces.

After tough deliberation, Veronica Farrell was chosen for first place with her framed crochet angel, which, like many of the pieces on display, could be sold successfully at any Christmas fair.

A special award was also presented to Phyllis Royal, the teacher of the crochet class, for her encourage-ment, support and volunteering over the year.
