Faughs senior hurlers are back in Division One

OUT OF the top fight in the Senior Hurling League for the past three years, Faughs senior hurlers will be playing in Division One next season after seeing off Naomh Olaf 2-16 to 2-13 in Tymon Park on Saturday afternoon.

Requiring a win over Olaf's to secure the Division Two title, the Templeogue boys put together a solid performance to win the crown with still one more game to play against Raheny.

Having missed out in the league play-offs for the past two seasons, Faughs were determined to go all the way this year and they certainly achieved this by winning all their matches.

Faughs were six points to the good at the interval with Chris Bennett getting them off to a flying start with a goal in the opening minute while Thomas Walsh netted the second after 20 minutes.

However Olaf's aided by the breeze came storming back in the second half and came to within a point of the home side.

But with Eoin Prendergast, Karl O’Mahoney and Jack McFaye leading the charge, Faughs held out for a great win.

Centre back Emmet McKenna impressed for the winners while Bennett and O’Mahoney battled hard throughout.

“Our target at the start of the season was to achieve automatic promotion and we have achieved this so I’m delighted for the players and the club,” said Faughs manager Joe Cunningham.

“We missed out twice for promotion in the past two years and the players were really determined this season.

“They have worked hard and the age profile of the side is very young with an average age of 21 so it looks bright for this group of players.

“We have learned a lot this season especially in close games and we are looking forward to playing Division One hurling next year,” said Joe.
