February Sports Stars of the Month – George Bates & Evan Metcalfe
FEBRUARY was a truly special month for local boxers George Bates and Evan Metcalfe as they both finally captured National Elite Championship titles after having hit the bar a number of times in recent seasons.
St Mary’s BC competitor Bates secured the Men’s 60kg title after a tremendous performance that earned him a unanimous decision against Francis Cleary of Ballina in the decider.

It was one of the highlights in an unforgettable night for the Tallaght club as they landed three titles with Kellie Harrington taking the women’s equivalent following a 5-0 victory over Amy Broadhurst while Aoife Burke picked up the Women’s 75kg title.
Meanwhile Crumlin man Evan Metcalfe, who now trains under the watchful eye of Paul and Patrick Hyland at Hyland Boxing Academy, put behind him his share of heartbreak in previous Elite Finals, to land this season’s 56kg prize after beating Setanta BC fighter Thomas McCarthy.
Both Bates and Metcalfe are now on the Elite High Performance panel and, only last week, returned home from competition in the US.
