By Brendan Grehan
FIVE TEENAGERS, all from South Dublin, have appeared in Tallaght Court accused of having sex with a girl under the age of 17 last year, reports Brendan Grehan.
The five were arrested at their homes on Friday morning by gardaí and were brought to Tallaght Garda Station where they were charged.
They were later brought in custody before Judge Patrick Clyne and were dealt with individually.
Judge Clyne released them all on bail with conditions. As part of their bail, they are to have no contact, directly or indirectly, with the injured party, including making reference to her on social media.
The teenagers, aged 16, 16, 16, 17, and 18 respectively, all have addresses in South Dublin and are charged with having sexual intercourse with a named female child under the age of 17 at an address in Rathfarnham on March 14, 2014, contrary to Section 3 (1) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 2006.
The court heard that all five had been arrested that morning and were later charged in Tallaght Garda Station. All made no reply when charged.
In relation to the three 16-year-olds, Judge Clyne heard that the DPP had directed summary disposal. In relation to the 17- and 18-year-olds, the court heard that the DPP had directed summary disposal only on a plea of guilty.
There was no objection to bail from the prosecuting gardaí save a condition that they have no contact with the injured party.
Judge Clyne released them on their own bail of €100 each and on condition that they reside at their home addresses and have no contact, directly or indirectly with the injured party including making reference to her on social media. He remanded all five for a month to consider jurisdiction.
