Golden tresses of young girl raise over €840 for charity

A YOUNG schoolgirl from Ballyfermot went to extreme lengths to help those in need – cutting 18 inches off her golden locks and raising over €840 for charity in the process.
Sarah Richards-Canavan (8), from Cloverhill Road, wanted to go through with the goodwill gesture for years, according to proud mother Lisa Richards.
Lisa said: “Sarah came up with the idea at the age of five, when she saw something similar on television. She asked every year, but I put her off until she was old enough to know exactly what it meant.
“When she could be 100 per cent positive, we had a long chat, and she said she had this beautiful long hair for nearly nine years, and wanted to give it to someone who needs it more.”
The St Ultan’s NS student and her mother contacted Aoibheann’s Pink Tie for sponsor cards, and set up a Facebook page, which managed to draw in donations from the local community and overseas.
Lisa continued: “Local business Essence Beauty Salon supported her to do the cut, and raised €103. On Facebook, money was sent from family and friends all over the world including Australia, America, Turkey and the U.K. St Ultan’s raised €161 towards it.
“The cheque presentation to the charity took place at the school.”
Sarah’s golden locks were donated to Rapunzel Foundation, and she raised €846 for Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.
