AN ARRAY of talent was showcased last weekend as the 50th year celebration event of Olympian Gymnastics, with over 4,000 people packing out the National Basketball Arena for Cirque Olympia.
Olympian Gymnastics, which has clubs in Firhouse, Knocklyon and Templeogue and was established in 1965, had over 1,600 gymnasts performing at the two-day event which took place on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8.
The event also saw performances from Olympian Gymnastics after-school clubs which take place in Knocklyon, Greenhills and Whitechurch in Rathfarnham.
Veronica McCormack from Olympian Gymnastics told The Echo: “It was a massive event and it ran perfectly.
“There were four shows in total and they went brilliantly, it was absolutely jam-packed, and the National Basketball Arena said it was one of their biggest events so far this year.
“Training and practise for the event started in September, so two months of hard work went into it.
“Everyone took part, from our display teams to our cheerleading teams and our after-school classes. It really showcased what the gymnasts can achieve.”
Neil Gissane, club secretary of Olympian Gymnastics told The Echo: “It was a great weekend. Olympian Gymnastics is one of the oldest clubs in the country and since 1979 has been based in Templeogue.
“Over the past five years we’ve grown to over 2,000 members. Our ethos is participation. We’re not a competitive club and we encourage anyone and everyone to get involved.
“Our flagship teams all took part in the shows, from three-and-a-half all the way up to 21, and it showed our younger members how they can develop over the years.”
