A KILLINARDEN couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family over the weekend – marking the day when they said their vows in a double wedding with their siblings.

Colette (70) and Drimnagh man Brendan Byrne (72) got married alongside Collette’s sister, Catherine ‘Kay’ and Brendan’s brother, Sean ‘JJ’, in the Church of Our Lady of Consolation in Donnycarney on September 5, 1970.

Both couples are still together and have lived locally for several decades, with Kay and JJ residing in Jobstown, while Collette and Brendan live in Killinarden.

The couples went on honeymoon to Blackpool after their nuptials, and Colette and Brendan went on to have four children, Caroline, Garry, Kevin and Pamela.

Caroline told The Echo: “They get on fabulously, they have great respect for and understanding of each other.

“My dad’s very laid-back, and if anything needs to be done then my mam is the go-to person.

“They do say that opposites attract. My mam is the type of person who won’t take no for an answer, while my dad will just let things go over his head.”

Collete and Brendan’s family, including their six grandchildren, celebrated their milestone anniversary on Saturday, and Brendan told his grandchildren that Collette is “the love of his life”.
